Getting to know LinkedIn

Comments

[this is good]
I've been on LinkedIn for a couple years. It's for any professional who wishes to grow a network. Whereas myspace can be used for growing social networks, LinkedIn can be used for growing professional networks. I'd recommend connecting with people primarily in fields and industries of professional interest, and people you personally know (or know of) who may be outside of your field. You never know who may have a lead to your next career position.

That said, you'll want to be careful about randomly adding anyone who sends you a request especially if you don't want your LinkedIn profile turning into myspace, part II.
A vendor (I fired) sent me an invite to join. I said, ugh, I spend too much time here. But I went anyway and signed up. What a pain in the butt. I deleted the account.
NOW THE FLIP side. I'm in marketing and web networking is THE topic on everyone's minds, which I why I blog. And started one out of this network or any other to learn as well as many other tools.
The point is Linkedin came up in one of the blogging, Web 2.0 articles as a new and up and coming networking source and was spoken of well. And it's really pretty neat the way people can post recommendations about you, you can see people's relationships to one another through a kind of mapping they have. Kind of a "Six Degrees of Separation" but better. For someone looking for a job or a consultant looking for business, it is ideal - it seems. I agree, stay away from random, "can I join....." or even former colleagues you wouldn't recommend as a connection. You want this to enhance. Great lead generator idea. :)
GOOD LUCK. YOU WILL PREVAIL :)))))
Thanks! That is sound advice. It other words it's not like VOX where people add unknown people to their neighborhoods all the time.

I only saw a few people I know from former jobs. I sent invites to them and will see what kind of reception I get as they might not want to know me again. :-)
I'm trying to get back into graphic design (which I have not done for years and years) I am hoping to re-connect with classmates from art school and from past graphic design jobs. Also, I've been doing the odd freelance thing here and there. I was thinking this might be a good starting point. We shall see.

Thanks M & B!!!
