Don't get me wrong, I love finally having a job and I think I will love the job as well. But, geez, the most awful part has to be the filling out of the paperwork.
I opened up the new employee packet just now and saw that mountain of forms to be filled out... telling me: what to do and when to do it and what to copy and asking me for my frequent flier numbers and which rental car agencies I prefer and how many dependents I'm going to cover and asking about vision plans and sexual harrassment rules and 401K contributions and direct deposit bank accounts...
I just freaked and walked away. And the thing is, it's got to go out via UPS no later than tomorrow morning. I wonder if I can just "phone-a-friend" and have them come over and fill out this stuff for me... plus dig through my file cabinet to find my AutoCad certificate from 1999...
And please, sweet lord, someone needs to help me for I have no idea where my college diploma is.
EDIT: It's a Festivus miracle, I just reached into my file cabinet and, like, two seconds later I found my AutoCAD certification. Somebody was listening to my prayer! :-)
I have a job!
I will not be going to Japan. STILL have not heard from them.
Finally got that monkey off my back!
Some days, it seems, that recruiters run the world.
I can not tell you how many times I've talked to one over the last few weeks only to have them waste my time. My chief complaint with them is that most of them never seem to actually read my resume. Their main goal in recruiting seems to be to enter their search criteria into whatever hiring search engine they use and immediately call the unfortunate person whose name the computer spits out.
Recruiters also tend to come in flavors: agency recruiters and corporate recruiters.
If you can, avoid using the agency recruiters if at all possible. They are the stupidest ones of the two. They NEVER read your resume. They just call you blindly and ask you inane questions that have no relevance to you or your situation, at all. They work on commission and are paid for by their customer; so don't believe for a second that they have your interest at heart no matter how sympathetic and "chummy" they seem.
The corporate recruiter is a little different. They are probably educated in Human Resources. They do know how to read your resume and know how to direct the correct questions to weed you out of the pack. They do not have time to play around. They take their job seriously. They have to answer to their boss and see this same boss every single day, unlike the agency recruiters that carry on to their next "sale".
If I have one grumble with corporate recruiters, it is the fact that they always tend to ask me to re-write my resume to emphasize this or punch up that. This makes me think that they also have an agenda, almost as if they have to prove to their boss that they are finding only the most outstanding and high quality candidates for the open positions.
One funny thing about recruiters though, they almost always call you when you are asleep. Twice this week I have been awakened from a dead sleep by the ringing of the phone. That's another thing about recruiters, they don't appreciate the need of the unemployed to sleep in. Oh, we are not sleeping in because we have given up, we are sleeping in because we are up at all hours sending resumes off to all the other recruiters who are not going to hire us.
